“Mountain skills” is an umbrella term for a vast set of skills necessary to keep you and others safe, as well as to give you the best experience possible when in the mountains. A mountain skills course provides you with this skill set, enabling you to have a fun, rewarding and safe experience on your own adventures.
Although a mountain skills course also covers navigation, it is strongly recommended that you already know the basics of navigation (e.g. setting the map, and taking bearings). You can also learn that in a 1-day navigation course.
What you will learn
On a mountain skills course you will learn amongst many other things:
- How to plan a multi-day adventure, taking into account the weather forecast, your & your group’s abilities, etc., so that having a good time is (almost) guaranteed
- What to pack for a wild camping trip
- How to use basic and advanced navigation techniques as you go
- How to camp responsibly
- What to do in an emergency
Course options
Mountain skills courses run from April to October. The group ratio is 1:6. The following courses are available:
- 2+2-day course with the first 2 days learning the relevant skills while out on day walks, and an optional expedition on the last 2 days with an overnight wild camp
